These Pipe
Bags have the classic Cheyenne bar design sometimes referred
to as a military design. One Museum curator told me that it
was a design used mostly by the famed Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. As
you can see it was one of my favorite designs to bead. They are
all beaded in old time colors in size 11/0 on brain-tanned buckskin. A
couple of these bags have a section of quilled rawhide slats
between the bag section and the fringe.
Natural earth pigments are
used to add color to the
fringe, appendages, and
sometimes to the entire
bag. Hanging from the
appendages are tin cones
with dyed horse- hair.
